A series of bizarre, ghoulish crimes defy explanation, with only a King James Bible left on the scene as a clue. Are they some sort of message? What kind of people have so little respect for animal or human life? And what gets lost when belief turns into zealotry?
When an intellectually handicapped man walks into a bank wearing a feather in his hair and claiming to have a bomb around his neck, the bank employees rush to do what he says; Wallander and team have to figure out who sent him. The case plunges Kurt and his daughter into the world of astrology, about which they had always been skeptical.
A middle-aged wealthy couple are found murdered at their stately home during the days that a military exercise has overtaken Ystad. A baby screams alone in an abandoned car along a highway. His father has disappeared and his mother lives in a catatonic state in a psych hospital. Because of Kurt’s health issues, Linda has to take the lead on a case that brings her face to face with any parent’s worst nightmare.
An African man lies dead in the car of a freight train that came from Ystad. Most of the evidence points to it being a race crime. But the investigation takes a surprising turn when the murder weapon is connected to one of Kurt's childhood friends who happens to be running for office on an anti-immigration platform.

Wallander’s investigation uncovers the reasons for their disdain, which turns to horror when members of the community also become threatened. Just how perfect is their world, anyway?
Following an argument with her lover on her boat, a woman is found dead. Wallander and the Ystad police investigate; their enquiries lead them to a farm commune and to an old friend of Linda's.
When a woman is shot dead on the beach outside her restaurant, the only witness is her young daughter. Wallander and his team are informed about a restaurant mafia in Malmo run by Jack Hansson, so the Malmo police are called in to assist. One of their cops, Frank Borg, knows a little bit too much about Jack's business dealings, and his methods are unconventional.
Eleven-year-old Johannes is found dead in a barn after he has been sexually abused. Lindman is charged with telling the father, whom he knows from a local shooting club, but is taken off the case for previous unprofessional contact and pursues his own investigations. The prime suspect, a man seen chatting to Johannes at a supermarket, is found dead but his neighbour, an ex-policeman, had already arrested a similar child killer years earlier. As the investigation continues, it is clear that child pornography is involved, reopening old memories for Lindman.
