When a man accused of murdering young girls is killed in prison Morse finds one body was never found. Then a witness is murdered. As they dig into the case they come across a group of middle-aged men who take glamour photos. They find a body - but it's of a middle-aged man. So what's going on?
When don Felix McClure is found stabbed to death, Morse suspects Brooks - his college servant, who left his job abruptly after a student committed suicide. The don, student and his roommate were all in love with Brooks' daughter. But when Brooks is found dead it seems his wife is hiding a secret.
Rachel James is shot through her window. She was having an affair with Julian Storrs, a don who wants to be Master. When her journalist neighbour is killed, Morse thinks he was a blackmailer and believes James' death was a mistake. Storrs and his rival for Master are suspects but others have secrets too.
Morse collapses and is taken to hospital where he reads about the Oxford Canal Murder in 1859. Two men were hanged for it but Morse thinks there was a miscarriage of justice and enlists the help of a young police recruit. They use modern forensic tests on the original evidence and unearth an insurance fraud.
An anonymous letter gives new life to the case of Yvonne Harrison a year after her murder. Morse has just come back to after being off sick and won't take it easy. As the body count rises, Morse finds he's investigating a woman who had many affairs.
