The owner of a private clinic has committed suicide then Morse finds he was bound and gagged. One suspect is Michael Steppings who wrote threatening letters after his daughter was left brain-damaged after a botched operation. Then Morse finds one letter was altered which puts a new slant on it all.
When rapist Barrie escapes from prison, he contacts Morse and they play a deadly game of cat and mouse. Morse is assisted by the man's psychiatrist and when he refuses to play the game Barrie's way, the rapist kidnaps her. Morse thinks Barrie's involved in a local cult but is he on the right track?
An unpleasant but very rich business man and a world-famous opera singer are to receive honorary degrees. When a sniper opens fire the diva is shot. But was she the intended target? Morse gets to combine his love of music with his job on this case.
