Wheelchair-bound and terminally ill Henry Fallon commits suicide but Morse has mixed feelings about working on the case as he was once engaged to Mrs Fallon. When he finds it's murder, the son-in-law becomes a suspect. But Lewis is concerned that Morse's professionalism is compromised.
When a tycoon is found murdered at his country house, his wife and sons come under suspicion. Morse finds the family is unconcerned and hides dark secrets. Then he's hounded by the press and comes under pressure from his boss. When a second murder occurs he delves into the family's past.
Morse and Lewis go to Verona, Italy to look into the death of a woman attending a clinic run by a convicted fraudster. While Lewis is homesick, Morse falls under the spell of Nicole, an opera singer, also at the clinic. Then he uncovers a fraud in counterfeit rare manuscripts and Nicole may be involved.
Three men are in an open prison for property fraud. When one is murdered, Morse and Lewis investigate while trying not to upset the prison authorities. Then someone tries to kill one of the two surviving prisoners and they realise there might be more than property fraud going on.
Tragedy strikes when Morse's niece commits suicide. He takes leave to try to find a reason and comes into contact with the alien world of house parties, raves and designer drugs. Lewis is working an the death of a young man and when they're re-teamed they see similarities in the two cases.
