Rich American tourist Laura Poindexter dies in the Randolph Hotel and her jewellery goes missing including the Wolvercote Tongue which she was going to donate to the Ashmolean Museum. When the museum expert is found dead and Laura's husband goes missing, Morse suspects foul play.
Teenager Valerie Craven vanished six months ago while going home from her exclusive girls school. Morse is convinced she's dead. However, her parents receive a note from Valerie and suspicion falls on fellow students, men in her diary and some teachers. When one is killed, it's now a murder case.
At a college awards dinner, a Japanese man is killed. When traces of drugs are found on a student's clothing the drug squad is now involved. But when a second member of the group is murdered, Morse is convinced that this is far more than a simple case of drug smuggling gone awry.
Morse investigates the murder of Sylvia Kane, who was found dead in a pub car park. She was last seen hitch-hiking with another woman and took a lift in a red car. When Morse finds an envelope on the dead girl addressed to a co-worker, he uncovers a complex web of passion, corruption and lies.
