Inspector Morse is in the same choir as Anne Staveley and has been wooing her. After she's found hanged, Morse suspects foul play and when her nosy neighbour is also found dead, he's convinced Anne was murdered too. Morse teams up with Lewis for the first time and a classic partnership is born!
Morse and Lewis investigate the death of Nicholas Quinn, a hard of hearing Oxford examiner who had recently complained to his superior that others in the examination syndicate were selling secrets. Quinn died of cyanide poisoning but Morse is convinced that this is a case of murder, not suicide.
Church warden Harry Josephs is found dead after Sunday service and the autopsy reveals a morphine overdose. When others who attended the service end up dead, Morse suspects everyone who attended that service is in danger.
