The new baby twins fill David and Karen with the joys of parenthood. Pete finds himself without a roof over his head, having overstayed his welcome at Adam and Rachel's, and resorts to moving back in with Jenny, who looks to have hit the jackpot with Internet millionaire Robert.
Heartbreak continues to dog Rachel and Adam as a false alarm prompts them to seek specialist advice, concerned cancer treatment may have left him infertile, while Jenny's life takes an upward turn as she succumbs to the potent charms of Internet millionaire Robert. Pete, however, finds himself out on his ear : his misery compounded by a tardy revelation about his new landlord .
As Rachel and Adam deal with the mental anguish involved in clinical tests, Jessica urges David to arrange a party to celebrate his 40th birthday : an event unlikely to pass without incident, especially if Pete decides to invite salsa-dancing Ramona.
Pete is dropped from his landlord's gay football team after failing to display the required characteristics, and opts instead to spend an enlightening evening with Ramona. Karen hears an old flame on the radio and contacts the programme to arrange a meeting, David and Jessica let their emotions overflow in the wake of defeating the supermarket developers.
Pete learns the perils of seeking love over the Internet when the 'teacher' he arranges a date with turns out to be a 14-year-old schoolgirl. Scepticism greets Adam and Rachel's announcement of their engagement, and Jenny and Karen fall out while organising an exhibition of Brodie's photographs.
Adam's stag weekend in Northern Ireland and Rachel's trip to a health farm lead to revelations which threaten the couple's future happiness. Adam must bury the past by bidding farewell to his first love, and Rachel must forgive him for kissing Jenny - twice.
Adam buys Rachel an engagement ring which she hates and promptly loses. Jenny ends up on her own again, with Robert backing off and Pete demanding a divorce, while Karen is arrested for punching a would-be car thief.
Adam and Rachel's wedding proves a disaster as David's infidelity becomes common knowledge, prompting a showdown with Karen, and Pete's best man's speech only adds to the bride's blushes, prompting her parents to beat a hasty exit from the reception.
